Confidential Assistance for Kentucky Judges- SCR 3.990

Like any other member of the legal profession, judges sometimes face problems—stress, depression, balancing work and family, alcohol or drug use, or other compulsive behaviors. As a judge, the problems you face are more likely to go unnoticed and untreated because of the very nature of your role in the legal system. You work in isolation, often unable to talk about your problems because of the confidential nature of your work. As a judge, you may be reluctant to seek help because of fear, denial and embarrassment—even hopelessness. Above all, you may be concerned about your problems becoming known and negatively impacting your status and reputation. KYLAP can help.

Confidential

KYLAP is a confidential service under Supreme Court Rule 3.990. KYLAP never initiates a complaint or reports a self-referral to any disciplinary agency.



Free

There is no fee for services. KYLAP is entirely funded through attorney annual fees.

KYLAP accepts anonymous referrals from individuals who have concerns about a fellow colleague, law student, or judge.

Judges who need assistance because of alcoholism, substance abuse, addiction or mental health issues may reach other judges, who are in recovery or who have gone through treatment, by calling a helpline sponsored by the American Bar Association.

Judges who have volunteered to be a personal resource to other judges throughout the US and Canada are uniquely positioned to share their experiences, strengths and hope. Both judges in need of help and those interested in serving as peer-to-peer volunteers should call 800-219-6474 during business hours Central time.

Kentucky Lawyer Assistance Program

Kentucky Supreme Court Rules 3.900 through 3.995 establish and implement the Kentucky Lawyer Assistance Program (KYLAP). KYLAP is a broad-brush program involving assistance for impairment that may result from addiction to intoxication or drugs, chemical dependency, substance abuse, mental disease, mental disorder or defect, psychological or emotional illness that impairs, or may foreseeably impair, a person’s ability to practice law or serve on the bench. Services are available for law students, lawyers and judges.

The mission and purpose of KYLAP is to address impairment or potential impairment issues within the Kentucky legal community and to offer confidential assistance to those who are affected in a manner that serves to help insure a continuing high standard of professional competence.

Strict confidentiality is assured by SCR 3.990.
