Law school is hard. Period. Classes are extremely competitive and force you to constantly compare yourself to others. We understand you may feel inadequate at times. The pressures law students must endure cause high levels of stress that can turn into burnout, anxiety, depression, grief, anger, or all the above. KYLAP can help.

- Mental Health Emergencies: For urgent psychological concerns after hours, please call (859) 257-8701 and you will be connected to a mental health professional.
- Counseling Center: Call (859) 257-8701 during our business hours (8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday) and be scheduled for an initial assessment later in the week or following week. Or, for a same-day initial assessment appointment, walk into 201 Frazee Hall between the hours of 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, or 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM on Wednesday and be seen on a “first come, first served” basis.

- Mental Health Emergencies: For urgent psychological concerns go to the University of Louisville Hospital Psychiatric Emergency Room. U of L offers excellent inpatient, outpatient and emergency psychiatric services through the hospital.

Northern Kentucky University Salmon P. Chase College of Law
- Mental Health Emergencies: For urgent psychological concerns students can call the on campus police at (859) 572-7777 or the crisis hotline (513) 281-CARE (2273)
- Counseling Center: Chase students are eligible for services offered by NKU’s Health, Counseling, and Student Wellness Center. Most services are covered by insurance and for those without insurance; a schedule of fees can be obtained from the center. Services include: online screening programs,
- individual counseling, couples counseling, group counseling, referrals to outside resources, consultations, and educational presentations. All services are confidential, except in the case of life-threatening circumstances or legal mandates.
- Hours of operation are Monday to Friday 8:30AM – 4:30PM.
- Call (859) 572-5650 to make an initial appointment; students are typically seen within the same week. Please note that there is always a counselor available for emergencies.

KYLAP is a confidential service under Supreme Court Rule 3.990. KYLAP never initiates a complaint or reports a self-referral to any disciplinary agency.
Free
There is no fee for services. KYLAP is entirely funded through attorney annual fees.
Anonymous
KYLAP accepts anonymous referrals from individuals who have concerns about a fellow colleague, law student, or judge.

Kentucky Lawyer Assistance Program
Kentucky Supreme Court Rules 3.900 through 3.995 establish and implement the Kentucky Lawyer Assistance Program (KYLAP). KYLAP is a broad-brush program involving assistance for impairment that may result from addiction to intoxication or drugs, chemical dependency, substance abuse, mental disease, mental disorder or defect, psychological or emotional illness that impairs, or may foreseeably impair, a person’s ability to practice law or serve on the bench. Services are available for law students, lawyers and judges.
The mission and purpose of KYLAP is to address impairment or potential impairment issues within the Kentucky legal community and to offer confidential assistance to those who are affected in a manner that serves to help insure a continuing high standard of professional competence.
Strict confidentiality is assured by SCR 3.990.
